Ideas: OpenStack to Become Arm of The Linux Foundation

http

The Open Infrastructure Foundation has agreed to become part of The Linux Foundation in order to foster collaboration with maintainers of projects such as Kubernetes and the Linux operating system.

This alliance aims to streamline deployments, reduce costs for enterprise IT organizations, and promote cross-pollination among these leading open source projects. OpenStack, which is still widely used in telecommunications after 15 years and 31 updates, has seen a resurgence driven by factors like increased VMware licensing fees, the need for higher GPU utilization rates, AI workloads, and data sovereignty requirements.

The collaboration with The Linux Foundation will help reduce maintenance costs and expose more contributors to OpenStack.

GitHub Repo: Komodo

Komodo

Komodo is a web app to provide structure for managing your servers, builds, deployments, and automated procedures.

With Komodo you can:

  • Connect all of your servers, and alert on CPU usage, memory usage, and disk usage.

  • Create, start, stop, and restart Docker containers on the connected servers, and view their status and logs.

  • Deploy docker compose stacks. The file can be defined in UI, or in a git repo, with auto deploy on git push.

  • Build application source into auto-versioned Docker images, auto built on webhook. Deploy single-use AWS instances for infinite capacity.

  • Manage repositories on connected servers, which can perform automation via scripting / webhooks.

  • Manage all your configuration / environment variables, with shared global variable and secret interpolation.

  • Keep a record of all the actions that are performed and by whom.

There is no limit to the number of servers you can connect, and there will never be. There is no limit to what API you can use for automation.

GitHub Repo: GitHub Action tj-actions/changed-files is compromised

Warning

Popular GitHub Action tj-actions/changed-files has been compromised (GitHub issue) with a payload that appears to attempt to dump secrets, impacting thousands of CI pipelines. This isn’t the first security issue with tj-actions/changed-files—see prior vulnerability CVE-2023-51664.

tj-actions/changed-files is a Github action to retrieve all files and directories. Prior to 41.0.0, the `tj-actions/changed-files` workflow allows for command injection in changed filenames, allowing an attacker to execute arbitrary code and potentially leak secrets. This issue may lead to arbitrary command execution in the GitHub Runner. This vulnerability has been addressed in version 41.0.0. Users are advised to upgrade.

Ideas: Career advice in 2025.

Cubist Art

The ideas expressed in the article discuss the challenges faced by software professionals in the current job market due to the rapid transition to foundational models and large language models (LLMs).

It highlights how the skills required for senior roles have shifted, making it difficult for those who excelled in previous areas. The valuation of non-AI companies has decreased, leading to fewer opportunities for hiring, promotions, and career growth.

The article suggests that joining an AI company is a major exception but warns about the high demands and risks involved. It advises individuals to find ways to make their current roles more rewarding or be prepared for a potentially different job market.

Ideas: BRICS Adopts Bitcoin & Crypto for Oil Trade.

Bitcoin

Russia has adopted Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies for its oil trade as a way to circumvent Western sanctions. This shift towards blockchain technology and digital currencies is part of Russia's efforts to find alternative payment methods amidst financial restrictions imposed by Western countries.

Russian oil companies have been using cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ether, and stablecoins such as Tether to facilitate complex transactions and convert foreign currencies into Russian Roubles. While the use of traditional banking systems is still prevalent, cryptocurrency adoption in Russia's energy sector represents a growing trend that could have geopolitical ramifications. This strategy may reshape international commerce for sanctioned countries in the future years as other countries facing sanctions consider adopting similar approaches to maintain their trade operations efficiently and independently from Western financial systems.

The Russian cryptocurrency oil trade, valued at approximately $192 billion last year, is expected to continue even if sanctions are lifted, due to the convenience and speed that cryptocurrencies offer in international transactions. This development highlights the potential for blockchain technology to provide benefits such as increased transaction speed and reduced intermediary costs, while also giving sanctioned countries more autonomy.

Ideas: Dopamine addiction: the obscure side of the seeking-reward loop.

Dopamine

Dopamine addiction is a growing concern in today's always-online world where instant gratification is readily available through various digital platforms like social media, gaming, and pornography. This overstimulation has led to a society obsessed with easy pleasures, but it can have serious consequences for individuals' mental health. The pursuit of pleasure leads to an increased craving for dopamine release, making individuals vulnerable to addiction.

To combat this issue, Android and iOS offer built-in features that help users manage distractions, and many other apps provide additional services aimed at reducing dopamine addiction. Practicing mindfulness and setting digital boundaries are also effective strategies for breaking free from the fast-feedback loop designed to capture attention. The article is well researched and goes into considerable detail.
